The holidays always bring out the wildest versions of our families, and if you’re part of “the Sandwich Generation” like Mitch, you already know we’re the ones stuck holding it all together. Every year we watch grown folks act up like somebody spiked the yam juice, forgetting the babies are right there soaking up every loud word and heavy vibe. Kids don’t have the language for “we just playin’,” so all they feel is tension and confusion, and honestly, that’s not what any holiday should be about. Then we, the adults in the middle, are juggling a whole stack of roles while trying not to lose our damn minds. In this episode, Mitch talked about that meme where a man supposedly fought his cousin over a vegan turkey, and when she looked it up? No location, no date, no real source—basically fake as hell. And that matters, because while some memes are funny, others (like real situations involving public figures that we talk about in this podcast) have real consequences, especially for kids who witness it. We gotta get into the habit of fact-checking and not taking everything social media throws at us as gospel. Meanwhile, our elders—the bottom bun of this holiday sammitch—come with their own mix of memory loss, old grudges, gumming turkey bones and “back in my day” stories that somehow turn into arguments over nothing. But they’re still the foundation, and caring for them means finding what works for us, even if that means taking them out for Thanksgiving dinner because the kitchen was the last place you had energy for. This whole holiday sammitch is about balance: protecting the kids at the top, preserving ourselves in the middle, and honoring the elders at the bottom.
