S2 EP14 – Da “No Contact”

Mitch discusses the trending term of “no contact” and what it means.

What happens when distance becomes boundary? This episode explores the growing conversation around “no contact” and what happens when family relationships become too painful to maintain. Through the lens of children, adults, and elders, we look at boundaries, childhood wounds, family trauma, and the complicated reality of estrangement. Sometimes no contact is a deliberate choice; sometimes, it happens organically after years of hurt, neglect, or abuse. And sometimes, when we wonder why no one visits an elder in a nursing home, the answer may be found not in abandonment, but in the wounds of a lifetime that person left behind. This episode asks a difficult question: What happens when the people we love are also the people who taught us that distance was necessary?

S2 EP13 – Da Funeral Poverty

Mitch interviews Porscha Dilllard about funeral poverty. Also part of the discussion is the questioning of what happens in the space between an ending and a beginning? In this liminal episode which closes out one year and gets ready for another, Mitch explores grief, New Year’s reflections and the concept of community. On topic are the many ways we care for one another when life changes forever.

Joining the conversation is Porscha Dillard, Director of Off the Chain Alliance, an organization providing wraparound grief support and addressing funeral poverty for disenfranchised communities in the Inland Empire.

From the loss of a newborn or stillborn baby to the death of an elder who has lived a full life, grief is never one-size-fits-all. Porscha shares how the sudden loss of her brother helped inspire the creation of Off the Chain Alliance and how the organization helps families navigate both the emotional and practical realities of death, including the devastating burden of funeral poverty: the inability to pay for funeral costs and the other associated costs of a death, especially when untimely.

Mitch and Porscha also explore advance directives, life insurance, dignity, legacy, and the simple but powerful ways community can show up when families need it most. This is a conversation about death, yes. Yet, ultimately, it is about love, preparation, remembrance, and how we carry one another across the threshold from life to the afterlife.

S2 EP11 – Da Holiday Sammitch

Mitch shares the holiday challenge.

The holidays always bring out the wildest versions of our families, and if you’re part of “the Sandwich Generation” like Mitch, you already know we’re the ones stuck holding it all together. Every year we watch grown folks act up like somebody spiked the yam juice, forgetting the babies are right there soaking up every loud word and heavy vibe. Kids don’t have the language for “we just playin’,” so all they feel is tension and confusion, and honestly, that’s not what any holiday should be about. Then we, the adults in the middle, are juggling a whole stack of roles while trying not to lose our damn minds. In this episode, Mitch talked about that meme where a man supposedly fought his cousin over a vegan turkey, and when she looked it up? No location, no date, no real source—basically fake as hell. And that matters, because while some memes are funny, others (like real situations involving public figures that we talk about in this podcast) have real consequences, especially for kids who witness it. We gotta get into the habit of fact-checking and not taking everything social media throws at us as gospel. Meanwhile, our elders—the bottom bun of this holiday sammitch—come with their own mix of memory loss, old grudges, gumming turkey bones and “back in my day” stories that somehow turn into arguments over nothing. But they’re still the foundation, and caring for them means finding what works for us, even if that means taking them out for Thanksgiving dinner because the kitchen was the last place you had energy for. This whole holiday sammitch is about balance: protecting the kids at the top, preserving ourselves in the middle, and honoring the elders at the bottom. And through all the noise, drama, and emotional leftovers, we gotta remember one thing: please stay in the middle of the food, not the foolishness. Mitch says: “If you’ve got stories, questions, chaos, or wisdom from your own holiday sammitch, hit me up at dasandwichgenration@gmail.com.”
